PURPOSE:To produce an alcohol, especially methanol and ethanol, directly from CO and H2, in the presence of a catalyst system obtained by using an easily available alkylamine halide as a cocatalyst, and dissolving the cocatalyst together with an Ru compound in an aprotic amide solvent. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol is produced by contacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing a ruthenium compound (e.g. triruthenium dodecacarbonyl, etc.). The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst system obtained by dissolving a cocatalyst of formula I (R1 is H, methyl or ethyl; R2 and R3 are methyl or ethyl; X is Cl, Br or I), preferably the compound of formula II (e.g. trimethyl ammonium bromide, etc.) together with the ruthenium compound in an aprotic amide solvent (e.g. N-methylpyrrolidin-2- one, etc.). The cocatalyst can be synthesized easily from an alkylamine and a hydrogen halide, and is produced in the reaction solution simultaneously with the production of the alcohol. |
