<p>Novel process for preparing polymers of formula (I) (where n is 20-50,000, R1, R2 and R3 are H, Cl, Br or 1-5C alkyl, >=1 being halogen) comprises reacting a stoichiometric excess of the appropriate phenol with poly(dichlorophosphazene) at 115-160 degrees C for 5-100 hrs. Specif. (I) are (4-Cl(or Br) C6H4O)2-PN n, (3-CH3-4-XC6H3O)2PN n and (4-X-3,5-(CH3)2C6H4O)2PN n, (where n is 20-50,000 and X is Cl or Br). The products are free of P-Cl sites and are therefore hydrolysis resistant. They are also soluble and fire resistant and are used as insulators, construction materials, carpet backings, protective clothing etc.</p> |
