A rod (46) extends axially through a mixing tube (20) and is fitted with baffles (50). The rod (46) is attached to a cover (34) which closes the mixing tube (20) at one end and which can be easily removed. The waste water which flows through the mixing tube, and to which chemicals such as FeCl3 and Ca(OH)2 have first been added, is made to swirl by the baffles, as a result of which the chemicals are thoroughly mixed with the waste water. Solids contained in the waste water, particularly fibres, show only a slight tendency to be deposited at or behind the baffles (50); if deposits should nevertheless be formed, they can easily be flushed away, to which end the rod (46) with the baffles (50) can if necessary rapidly be removed. <IMAGE>
