The invention relates to a dowel for anchoring an attachment element, especially a screw having a normal thread in a hole, which dowel is essentially constructed in the form of a sleeve having at least one shell-shaped wall part. In order to achieve a high retention force with simple installation, the dowel has the following main features: the wall of the dowel has anchoring elements which project alternately inwards and outwards, and these anchoring elements are constructed as barb-shaped projections. Very economical manufacture is achieved in that the dowel is produced from steel plate and the anchoring elements are parts of the surface which are stamped out from the wall.
