A new process for dehydrogenating ethylbenzene to styrene in which styrene is removed from the recycle water stream comprises (A) passing a steam/ethylbenzene mixt. through a heterogeneous catalyst bed under dehydrogenation conditions, (B) passing the effluent contg. ethybenzene, styrene and steam to a condensn. zone to effect partial condensn., (C) passing the effluent stream to a phase sepn. zone to form a hydrocarbon phase and a water phase, (D) extracting (a portion of) the water stream with benzene in a liq. liq. extn. zone to remove the styrene, (E) passing the styrene-free water stream into the steam generation zone for formation of steam for the reaction zone, (F) fractionating the hydrocarbon phase in a fractionation zone to separate benzene and toluene from the styrene and ethylebenzene and (G) passing (a portion of) the benzene stream into the liq. liq. extrn. zone on the solvent stream. Coking of the steam generator tubes and in the heat exchangers, is prevented and the excessive costs of a stripper are avoided.
|
