The system determines the attitude and distance of objects in the field of view of an imaging device. It comprises a transmitter of radiation, a detector of the radiation, and an object consisting of test patterns formed by a surface with corrugations having a particular layout. Bright points on the illuminated test patterns are reflected back to the detector, the points being distributed along a row of markings whose form depends on the said layout of the corrugations. The system includes means for determining the point at which the lines of at least two of the rows intersect, such a point being the projection of the imaging device onto the plane of the test patterns. <IMAGE>
