PURPOSE:To obtain a substantially odorless polymer in high yields, by polymerizing a 3C or higher alpha-olefin in the presence of hydrogen by using a catalyst obtained from a specified solid catalyst component, an organoaluminum compound and a silicon compound. CONSTITUTION:A reaction product between an aluminum halide and a silicon compound of formula I (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each a 1-8C alkyl or the like, and n is 0 or 1-3), e.g., tetramethoxysilane, is reacted with an Mg compound of formula II (wherein R<3> is a 1-8C alkyl and X is a halogen), the obtained carrier is reacted with a titanium tetrahalide and a phthalate ester, and the obtained solid is reacted again with a titanium tetrachloride. A 3C or higher alpha- olefin is polymerized in the presence of hydrogen by using a catalyst obtained from the above-produced solid catalyst component, an aluminum compound of formula III (wherein R<4> is a 1-6C alkyl) and the silicon compound of formula I .
