PURPOSE:In preparting the titled compound by hydrating directly 3- or 4-(4'- methyl-3'-pentenyl)-DELTA<3>-cycloehxenecarboaldehyde, to obtain the desired compound advantageously, by using a specific solvent and an acidic ion exchange agent. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by the formula I or formula II is directly hydrated in a solvent selected from acetone, isopropyl alcohol, dioxane, and an ether shown by the formula III (n is 1, 2, or 3; R is 1-4C alkyl) in the presence of an acidic ion exchange agent, preferably porous sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, as a hydrating agent at 20-120 deg.C, preferably at 40-100 deg.C, to give the desired compound shown by the formula IV useful as perfume, corresponding to the raw material, in high conversion ratio in high selectivity and in high yield by a simplifed process with preventing side reactions. Since the hydrating agent is easily handleable, it is extremely easily recovered and purified by comparison with a mineral acid, etc. |
