In order to produce a decorative pattern on the surface of a layer 37 of a material in a soft plastic state, the said surface is beaten with the free end parts of a plurality of flexible, filament-like elements 55. This beating process forms random impressions in the surface. The filament-like elements are preferably fixed to the peripheral surface of a rotatable body 53, which is situated at a distance from the surface that is to be treated, and this distance is essentially smaller than the length of the filament-like elements. The layer of material, the surface of which is to be treated, is moved in relation to the rotatable body, whilst the latter is made to rotate. This beating action makes it possible to produce surface patterns that simulate a slate surface or the surface of other natural materials. Such decorative surfaces may be produced on material layers that are cut out in panels or blocks for use as building materials, after these have been baked or become hardened. For example, the decorative pattern or the decorative texture can be produced on panels that are to be used as roof panels. <IMAGE>
