<p>A high-pressure rotary seal apparatus with a radially-polarized permanent magnet (26), which seal apparatus comprises: a housing (12); a magnetically-permeable shaft (18) to be sealed extending through the housing (12), the shaft (18) characterized by a plurality of separate grooves (22) or stages on the shaft, a radially-polarized permanent magnet (26) extending about the shaft (18), at least one pole piece (28) adjacent to and in a magnetic flux relationship with the radially-polarized permanent magnet (26) and extending about the shaft (18), one polarized end of the polarized magnet (26) and one end of the pole piece (28) extending into a close, noncontacting relationship with the grooves (22) on the surface of the shaft (18) to form a plurality of separate radial gaps; ferrofluid (34) disposed in the radial gaps to define a plurality of separate, spaced-apart ferrofluid O-ring seals (34) about the surface of the shaft (18); and a generally cylindrical, magnetically-permeable keeper element (24) extending about the other polarized end of the magnet (26) and the other end of the pole piece (28) in order to provide a magnetic flux circuit which extends between the radially-polarized magnet (26), the keeper element (24), the shaft (8), and the ferrofluid (34) in the radial gaps.</p> |
