PURPOSE:To shorten greatly the arithmetic processing time of run length and to attain the run length arithmetic processing of various types of straight lines and curves with the same arithmetic processor, by producing a chain code of an optional curve at a real number calculation part and calculating the run length of the data stored in a binary coding memory based on said chain code to obtain the position data on the changing point of the object picture element. CONSTITUTION:The video signals obtained by picking up an object by a picture input device like a TV camera are supplied to an analog/digital converter 1. Only the signals (data on the object) exceeding a prescribed threshold value are extracted among those output signals of the converter 1 and binary coded by a binary coding circuit 2 to be written on a binary coding memory 3. A chain code memory 18 stores the chain code coded at a real number calculation part 16. The part 16 reads the chain code out of the memory 18 and the data on the object out of the memory 3 and calculates the data run length of the object according to said chain code. Based on this calculated run length, the position of a changing point of the object picture element is obtained.
