摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain the titled catalyst which can give polyphenylene ether of a desired MW within a short time by markedly enhancing its polymerization activity, by producing the catalyst comprising a basic compound, a manganese salt and an N-alkylalkanol while contacting it with oxygen. CONSTITUTION:The preparation of a catalyst comprising a basic compound selected from among hydroxides, alkoxides and phenoxides of Group I a metals of the periodic table, a manganese salt and an N-alkylakanolamine for use in the production of a polyphenylene ether by oxidatively coupling a 2,6-disubstituted phenol with oxygen-containing gas is conducted while actively feeding at oxygen-containing gas and contacting it with the catalyst. The effect of this process may be through to be due to the fact that manganese ions of the manganese salt are oxidized with the fed oxygen to form a complex compound by coordinated with the N-alkylalkanolamine and solubilized, so that all of the manganese ions can take part in the polymerization reaction.
