A diesel engine fuel filter screws onto a header (12) within which is nested a fuel reservoir (14) containing electrical heaters that are energized when the engine electrical system is switched on. The reservoir is connected directly upstream of the filter, and the connection between the header and filter defines on annular space (160) devoid of fuel, so that the heated fuel flows directly to the top portions of the filter without having to push waxed fuel ahead of it. Thus the fuel in the filter becomes unwaxed by contact with the warmed fuel and passes through the filter outlet (32) to the engine. The reservoir is a flat annular chamber with a radial wall constraining flow round almost 360 degrees from inlet to outlet and contains two disc-like heaters, diametrically spaced and thermostatically controlled. The reservoir outlet extends vertically so that the reservoir always contains fuel. The assembly also includes an upstream primer pump (26) and a water discharge valve (84), opened manually in response to an electric signal from probe (110).
