An electrical transducer monitors the angular velocity of the shaft(62) of a roller for a coal feeder belt(12) which has a velocity representative of the coal feed rate. A pressure transducer provides an electrical signal representative of the hydraulic fluid pressure in a cylinder. This pressure determines the extension of the piston rod and consequently, the force applied to coal on the grinding table(16) by the grinding roll(20). A controller station stores data that is compared with the measured values of the coal feed rate and hydraulic fluid pressure. The controller output signal is supplied to a solenoid valve(100), which modulates the supply of hydraulic fluid to the cylinder.
