Process for purifying flue gas which is produced in the combustion of waste materials and contains both solids of the widest composition and also pollutant gases and heavy metals, in which the principal solid portions are removed from the flue gas in a separation unit and collected as fly ash, in which a scrubbing of the flue gas is carried out for the purpose of binding pollutant gases and the remaining solid portions, in which the flue gas leaving the separation unit is fed to a condensation/scrubbing unit in which the steam, HCl and/or heavy metals in vapour form contained in the flue gas are separated out, in which the condensate is used to dissolve out the soluble heavy metals of the fly ashes and in which the soluble heavy metals are subjected to a precipitation and are removed from the process. The solution is characterised in that the remaining residue portions are returned into the combustion chamber and the organic pollutants contained therein are destroyed by a high temperature treatment.
