The laser tube has a gas discharge channel (2) between the cathode (5) and anode (4) and is sealed at both ends by optical elements (10, 11), the Brewster windows or resonator mirrors. Near each optical element (10, 11) is a screen (12 or 14) which can be moved in the direct path between the gas discharge channel (2) or cathode (5) and the optical element concerned (10 or 11). In one embodiment of the invention, a further screen (13) is provided which can be moved into the direct path between the cathode (5) and the gas discharge channel (2).
