A brake device for trailers of tractor vehicles, especially of agricultural tractors with hydraulically operated wheel brakes is described, which has a first and a second trailer control valve. The first trailer control valve supplies compressed air to a first coupling head on the tractor vehicle side for actuating the brakes of a trailer with a dual line brake system. The second trailer control valve supplies compressed air to a second coupling head on the tractor vehicle side for actuating the brakes of a trailer with a single line brake system. In order when operating a vehicle with a trailer with dual circuit brake system to improve the response time of the brakes of the trailer and, in addition, to minimise the air consumption of the overall brake device, it is proposed that the control cylinder of the second trailer control valve be actuatable by way of a check valve switched into its open position after coupling the assigned trailer-side coupling head to the second tractor-vehicle-side coupling head. As a result it is possible, without distracting the attention of the driver, to shut the second trailer control valve off from the compressed air control supply when this is not needed. <IMAGE>
