Process for the solid-phase treatment of iron ores and of metallurgical oxides, consisting in agglomerating the ore or the oxides which are in the form of powder with a carbonaceous binder and in heating these agglomerates in a tank furnace in the presence of an excess of reducing agent added to the agglomerates in the form of carbons in pieces and in recycling countercurrentwise into the furnace, after purification, a proportion of the gas produced during the operation and re-formed in the furnace itself. On leaving the apparatus the iron obtained being separated by magnetic sorting from the pieces of devolatilised carbons.
