A microtome for preparing specimens having a small layer thickness, which comprises a specimen arm (11) which can be moved up and down and whose front end carries a specimen holder (19) which can be moved, with the aid of a feed drive (16, 17), towards a blade (31), has a sensor (27) which detects the feed and is connected to a feedback circuit for the feed drive.
