In order to monitor the operativeness of rail contacts (K1, K2), the latter are continuously connected to an evaluation device (MC) which evaluates the signals of the rail contacts. When the rail contacts are travelled over, a direction detection device (RE) is triggered and temporarily breaks the connection between the evaluation device and the rail contacts. Instead, it produces a connection between evaluation device (MC) and direction detection device (RE) via change-over contacts (U1, U2) and causes a travel direction-dependent switching signal to be read into the evaluation device. <IMAGE>
