The invention relates to a drive system which has a toothed belt pulley (12) and a toothed power-transmission belt (11) which interacts with the latter, the teeth (17) of the belt (11) being provided with vertical slots (28) which lead inwards through the centre of the tooth tips (21). The teeth (17) are made of a flexible material and, upon engagement in the pulley (12), are compressed in the longitudinal direction in order to close the slot (28) when the latter is in an engaging relationship with the belt pulley (12). In this way, backlash between the belt teeth (17) and the teeth (18) of the belt pulley can be largely eliminated and bending of the teeth prevented in an effective manner. <IMAGE>
