The invention proposes a grinder (1) which has a planar grinding surface and a drive (6, 17 to 21) which moves the abrasive carrier (25) to and from the grinding plane in an oscillating manner. This drive is to generate a movement which overrides the conventional movement of the abrasive carrier (25) and of the abrasive in the grinding plane. Better progress during grinding and a better finish are achieved as a result of the higher contact pressure, thus generated mechanically, and the periodic release and blowing-away of the grinding dust and of the detached abrasive particles. <IMAGE>
