A cartridge for an ink ribbon for receipt printers or the like comprises a first rotatably mounted bearing bush 12 onto which a winding core of an unused ribbon coil can be fitted. Furthermore, it comprises a spring element 42 which acts on a region of the outer circumference of the bearing bush 12 in the manner of a friction brake and it comprises a follower member 41, 79 which is guided resting on the outer circumference of the unused ribbon coil and acts in a controlling manner on a continuation of the spring element 42 in such a way that the spring force, with which the spring element 42 presses onto the bearing bush 12, is increasingly reduced as the diameter of the ribbon coil decreases. <IMAGE>
