The process for the production of castings made of cast iron comprises pouring metal into a mould, retaining the metal poured in until a surface skin forms on the casting, withdrawing the casting from the mould and cooling in a cooling chamber (8) with surfaces (13) which screen off the heat radiated from the casting. The temperature of the screening surface (13) of the cooling chamber (8) is held 500 to 600 DEG C below the temperature of the surface of the casting. In the chill casting machine by means of which the process according to the invention is put into practice, the cooling chamber (8) is designed as a through-chamber, equipped with means (14 and 15) for heating and automatically maintaining the temperature within predetermined limits and arranged in a fixed location relative to the mould plates (3) above the feed device for the bottom pouring plates (5). This allows the production of castings with the required microstructure and hardness.
