The car clutch assembly includes a membrane spring (9) which acts on the thrust plate (10). Parallel to the membrane spring is a compensating spring (14) which is inactive when the clutch is engaged. A toggle spring mechanism assists the force required to operate the clutch pedal. When the clutch pedal toggle spring is operated, its increased force on the pedal, after it has moved past the dead centre,is balanced by the compensating spring (14) whose force is acting in the opposite direction.
