A gripping device for gripping bodies having predetermined cylindrical gripping cross sections is provided with two pincer arms (6, 7) which are mounted on a movable support (1) so as to be displaceable by means of carriages (3, 4) in opposite directions in a gripping plane, and which have on their free outer ends gripping parts (8) having gripping surfaces (14a, 14b) which are arranged to form a V. The carriages (3, 4) can be freely displaced away from one another against the force of springs (5). Each gripping part (8) is mounted on the associated pincer arm (6, 7) so as to be pivotable through a limited range of angles about an axis which extends perpendicularly to the gripping plane. One spring acts on each gripping part (8) and presses the gripping part (8) into a reception position. On each slide (3, 4) there is arranged an arresting piece having a plurality of trapezoidal grooves which are arranged at intervals in the direction of displacement of the carriage (3, 4). The spindle of a hydraulic cylinder (19) is arranged perpendicularly to the direction of displacement and/or the arresting pieces, and the free end of the piston supports at least one wedge, one surface of which bears in the clamping position on a flank of a groove of one of the arresting pieces, the other wedge surface bearing on a flank of a groove of the other arresting piece, which flank points in the opposite direction.
