Perpendicular magnetic recording medium

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprises a recording medium base, a lower layer formed on the recording medium base, and an upper layer formed on the lower layer, the upper layer being made of cobalt-chromium, and the lower layer at least includes cobalt and chromium and may include also niobium or tantalum. The upper and lower layers constitute a magnetic layer in which the lower layer has an in-plane M-H hysteresis characteristic loop having a steep rise or jump in a vicinity of an origin thereof due to the different crystal layers within the layer and the conditions of depositing the lower layer using a sputtering technique are selected so as to achieve such a steep rise or jump in this property.
