PURPOSE:To obtain an alloy having all of properties required by a hydrogen occluding material such as large hydrogen occluding capacity and very small hysteresis by adding V to Zr and Mn so as to provide a prescribed composition. CONSTITUTION:This hydrogen occluding Zr alloy is represented by the general formula (where 0.5<x<1.5 and 0<y<1). The alloy is a novel alloy and has all of various characteristics required by a hydrogen occluding material. Especially, hysteresis during hydrogen occlusion and release is considerably improved as compared to a conventional alloy, large hydrogen storage capacity is obtd., and heat of reactions caused by hydrogen occlusion and release can be effectively utilized. Hydrogen occlusion and release reactions are easily activated, very high reaction rates are attained, a large amount of hydrogen can be occluded at high density, and the performance is not deteriorated even when hydrogen is repeatedly occluded and released.
