<p>Alcoxylation products of 2-benzylalkanol of formula (I) wherein R1 represents alkyl radicals containing from 6 to 22 atoms of C, R2 represents an alkylene radical containing from 2 to 6 atoms of C, and n is an integer from 1 to 100. Preferred compounds are ethoxylates and propoxylates of 2-benzylalkanols, with n comprised between 2 and 50. Their production is effected by heating mixtures of one mole of an alcohol having the formula R1-CH2-CH2OH with between 1 and 10 moles, preferably between 1 and 3 moles of benzyl alcohol in the presence of alkaline metal compounds and optionally hydrogenation catalysts at temperatures comprised between 180oC and 250oC (Guerbet reaction), by separating the benzyl alcohol in excess and by alcoxylation of the obtained Guerbet alcohol. The compounds are conveniently used as wetting, dispersing, emulsifying and purifying agents.</p> |
