PURPOSE:To detect a character position accurately by finding out a field position as the reference of a character position on a field end, and while referring the recognized result of a character, correcting the offset value between the center of a character pattern and the character position. CONSTITUTION:A document 2 is carried and scanned by a light source 3 and the reflected light of a printed character pattern is made incident upon a photodetecting element 4 and converted into an electric signal. An output signal from the element 4 is binary-coded by a binary-coding circuit 5 and stored in a storage circuit 6. A separating/discriminating part 7 separates a character pattern in the memory circuit 6 in each character, compares the separated result with a reference pattern stored in a dictionary file 8, outputs the coincident reference pattern to a user's device 9 as a recognized result, and controls reading. The character separation is executed on the basis of the coordinates of right and left ends of a field. In case of a right or left justified printing field, the coordinates of the right and left ends of the field are similarly corrected to execute the character separating/recognizing processing. Then, a printing position is calculated, a field position error is calculated, and if the value is larger than a regulated value, rereading is executed.
