An unknown object is detected in the following manner: the unknown object (2) is illuminated by an obliquely mounted slot-shaped light source (4) in such a manner that a slot-shaped light beam (7, 8) is imaged on the object (2) and its support (1). This imaged line of light (7, 8) is detected by a television camera (3) and weighted with preset geometric values of light source (4) and television camera (3).
