The starting point of the invention is a piece of furniture on which to sit or lie, with two upholstered parts usable either as seating furniture or as divan, in that the seat cushion 5 is detachably connected, at the rear upper edge, to the rear lower edge of a back cushion 11 reduced by the seat depth, the seat cushion 5 being extendable forwards on a lower frame serving as bedding box 1 and being supported in the extended position, and the lower frame having a supporting frame for receiving the back cushion in the extended position. This piece of furniture is characterised in that at the underside of the back cushion 11 is arranged a holding tongue 6 which is incorporated as a base in the back-cushion cover, with the cover forms a unit and projects forwards into the seat depth by a projection 8, on which there are arranged clips 7 for fastening a padded cover 9 with the aid of an edging 10 attached to the latter, which padded cover in the sitting position serves as a protective cover over seat and back cushions 5, 11 and in the lying position serves as sleeping underlay or cover, the holding tongue 6 reaching over the depth of the back cushion 11 in the lying position. <IMAGE>
