Coffee beans (18) and other material are roasted in a roaster (10) comprising a horizontal perforated support (16) surrounded by an enclosing wall (11) such that when heated from below a uniform flow of hot air passes through the perforations to roast material forming a layer on the support with the only motion of the material being due solely to the expansion of gas within such material. Use of a cover (13) enables heat to be reflected back from above onto the material. The support may be in the form of a continuous enclosed conveyor band (37) to provide a continuous roasting process. Alternatively green coffee beans can be packaged in the roaster which itself may be disposable and formed of aluminium foil. |
