PURPOSE:To make the axis of a cylindrical body coincident up to a center stop part with high accuracy by providing a top surface detection body which stands by lengthwise above the cylindrical body and a reverse surface detection body which abuts on the reverse surfaces of a couple of cradles. CONSTITUTION:When material wood 8 is conveyed to a front alignment position on a conveyor 1, the reverse surface detection body 1 is fallen down almost to a conveyance surface 11 by its own weight in contact with the reverse surface of the material wood 8 and the conveyor 1 stops at this position. At this time, when the material wood is made almost circular by a roughing lathe, the cradles 9 are elevated in contact with the peripheral edge and the material wood 8 is mounted, so that the lateral center of the material wood 8 is determined. A couple of top surface detection bodies 16 which stand by lengthwise above the material wood 8 are moved down and the radius D of the material wood 8 is calculated from the distance K to the top surface; and a signal of the start of elevation is obtained from the reverse surface detection body 12 which abuts on the reverse surface in the middle of the upward movement of the couple of cradles 9 where the material wood 8 is mounted and the cradles 9 are elevated until the center of the material wood 8 is aligned with a center stop part 15.
