PURPOSE:To improve water-pressure resistance characteristics by providing a water- pressure-resistant structure consisting of a water-pressure-resistant box and a water- pressure-resistant pipe wound spirally, connecting optical fibers therein and further covering the outside circumference of the water-pressure-resistant structure with a flexible protecting layer. CONSTITUTION:The respective optical fibers 1a of a submarine optical cable 1 are conducted to a connecting box 3 by respectively passing through flexible water- pressure-resistant pipes, and in said box 3, they are connected. The mutual connection of the fibers 1a is accomplished while the box 3 is held open, and after the connection, the box 3 is hermetically sealed by means of O-rings, gaskets, etc., so that no water pressure is applied upon the mutually connected part 4 of the fibers 1a. The end parts of the water-pressure-resistant pipes 1c, the water-pressure-resistant pipes 2 and the box 3 of the cable 1 are covered by a flexible protecting layer 5 of rubber or the like. Furher, the sheaths 1d of the cable 1 are wound on the outside circumference of the protecting layer 5 in a manner as to overlap each other. |
