In a printer having a frictional roller platen and a paper conveying device connected upstream thereof, each having their own drive motors, there is provided between the roller platen and the paper conveying device an element which monitors the looping of the paper in this region and whose output signal, as a switching signal, preferably controls the drive motor for the paper conveying device in such a way that the drive motor is switched on in each case only when the paper is stretched tautly or has a small loop. By means of the device, tolerances in the roller platen, influences of the paper characteristics, etc. are automatically compensated. The monitoring element can also be used for recognising the end of the paper. <IMAGE>
