PURPOSE:To enable a ribbon to be replaced under the condition where a power source is turned ON, by providing a means for detecting opening or closing of a cover which is opened for replacement of the ribbon, and a means for unlocking a printing head after stopping spacing of the head. CONSTITUTION:When replacing a ribbon, a front cover 5 is opened. On detecting this condition, movement of a printing head is stopped (for example, printing is conducted to a point of line feeding, then the head is returned to a home position, and is stopped), and the head is unlocked. Unlocking the head cuts off excitation of a spacing motor (c). For this purpose, source power supplied to the motor (c) may be cut off, or a driving signal for the motor (c) may be cut off. With the front cover 5 closed after replacement of the ribbon, this condition is detected, the head is moved to the home position, and printing is restarted. Accordingly, a printing mechanism part can be moved to an arbitrary position, and replacement of the ribbon is facilitated. |
