The basic idea of the invention is to pick up mechanical vibrations in a contactless fashion by means of optoelectronic elements, preferably in the case of stringed instruments. In this case, the light from the transmitting element (1), which is reflected by the vibrating body, impinges on the receiving optoelectronic element. No structure-borne sound of the string instrument is received by this sound pickup system, and there is equally no sound picked up from adjacent strings. The signals obtained in this way offer multifarious possibilities for simple further electronic processing. <IMAGE>
