The invention relates to a method for improving the washing effect of washing liquors, characterised in that the vessel containing the laundry is filled, before the start of the washing operation, with a gas which can readily dissolve in the water of the washing liquor, the air present in the pores of the fabric being exchanged with this as a result of diffusion. Because the gas present in the vessel occurs in excess, in practice the air present in the pores will be displaced completely when the washing operation starts. The washing liquor can then fill the pores, because the gas present in the pores is absorbed by the water of the washing liquor.
