The conventional washing and disinfecting machines for endoscopes have the disadvantage that the temperature changes during the individual washing, disinfecting and rinsing processes are not monitored. Since the effect of the liquid disinfectant, in particular, depends greatly on its temperature, uniform disinfection is not guaranteed in the conventional machines. Moreover, there is a great danger of excessively hot liquids causing damage and quality losses to the endoscope, its components and the machine. These disadvantages are avoided in that there are provided a device (124) for determining the temperature of the liquid disinfectant and means (122) for controlling this temperature as a function of the temperature determined. The device for determining the temperature is preferably constituted by thermocouples or the like in the washing space (2) of the machine and in the tank (62) for the liquid disinfectant. The means for controlling the temperature comprise, on the one hand, a first heating unit inside the washing space and a second heating unit (152) inside the tank and, on the other hand, a cooling unit (170) on a liquid supply line (44) or a cold water source (176) with the aid of which cold water can be added to the liquids. <IMAGE>
