The object of the present invention is 1. To provide a new, environmentally friendly gritting composition (grit) for removing or preventing snow and/or smooth ice (black ice), which composition causes little soiling and is free from dust, does not leave behind any discolouring or greasy residues, does not separate by a crystallisation process, and thereby guarantees a uniform and high neutralising and thawing effect with an immediate and a long-term action, and is not hygroscopic and thus can be scattered and stored in bags or as a loose product without restrictions, does not attack the organs of humans and animals and does not damage vegetation; and 2. to provide a scatter composition for winter gritting and soil improvement purposes which has a fundamental action as a soil improving agent (inter alia as a scarifying material) to loosen, aerate and fertilise the soil and to promote vegetation, and guarantees a good immediate and long-term action. This object is essentially achieved by a gritting (scatter) composition based on a composite mixture comprising granular material and components with a melting point-lowering and fertilising action, which composition comprises, in accordance with the invention, screened, dust-free lava and washed, screened quartzy sandstone which is free from dirt, the pores and cavities of the lava/quartzy sandstone granules being filled with calcium chloride by a mixing, drying and crystallisation process and the individual granules are coated with sharp-edged, crystallising magnesium kainite in a proportion of up to 60 % of the total amount, and have a particle size of 1-5 mm...
