The production of web material of all kinds is automated nowadays. The desired values regarding uniform thickness, weight, moisture content, opacity, smoothness and ash are optimised. This results in greater economy and higher quality. Measurement is usually carried out by means of sensors ("transmitter" and "receiver") 1 and 2, Fig. 1, guided above and below the web. Various physical processes are used. Until now the sensors were moved in a translatory, direction-changing manner, in a traversing frame, with acceleration and delay. This system is complicated in construction and susceptible to faults. A more simple guidance is the continuously "rotational" guidance. Articulated arms 3 and 4 permit a closed, synchronous movement of the sensors 1 and 2. 3 and 4 are mounted at 5 and 6 in the variable-size frame which is pivotable about 18. <IMAGE>
