The antitheft device contains a box K which fits exactly into the standardised opening in the dashboard for accommodating the cassette or compact disc player (9). Its covering panel (1) completely covers the player (9) and therefore conceals it from view, thereby eliminating or at least considerably reducing the temptation for a prospective thief. An anchoring body is fastened onto the inside of the covering panel (1) and takes the form of a hollow dummy cassette (2) which fits into the cassette slot (7) or of an elastic clasp (22) which rests against the inside walls of the cassette slot. A bearing (17) is also arranged on the covering panel (1) and supports a central rod (14) having transverse pins (16) which are arranged transversely to its axis. Rotation of the said rod can be prevented by means of a lock (19) in a position in which the transverse pins penetrate open slots (4) in the hollow dummy cassette (2) in such a way that they come to rest against the front wall (20) of the cassette slot or against other inside projections which are present in each player, and therefore make it impossible to remove the box. <IMAGE>
