The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of coke from coal by coking the coal and, if appropriate, one or more further process stages such as drying and preheating of the coal upstream of coking and, if appropriate, dry coke cooling downstream of coking, the coking and, if appropriate, one or more of the further process stages being carried out in a vessel sealed pressure-tight in each case by means of a gas which can be passed through the vessel by direct and/or indirect heat exchange, according to Patent Application P 3,516,227.9-24. It is proposed that the coal for the coking (formation of lumpy coke) is heated in the vessel only by indirect heating in the temperature range between about 250 DEG C and 600 DEG C. The distance of the heat sources and the temperature of the heat sources is matched to the desired lump size and quality of the coke.
