PURPOSE:To facilitate adjustment in a compact structure by sealing between both forward end portions of a plunger for pressing an endless belt and a cylinder body by a diaphragm to form a resevoir, and keeping the reservoir pressure under the plunger pressure by a check valve. CONSTITUTION:A hydraulic adjuster 12 for pressing a tensioner pulley to apply tension to a timing belt comprises a housing 27 with which a cylinder body 28 capable of moving in the axial direction is engaged by a detent bolt 29 and a bolt 30 and a plunger 31. Both forward end portions of the cylinder body 28 and the plunger 31 are sealed by a diaphragm 36 to form a reservoir 37, and a check valve 35 is provided in an oil path 34 communicating with a pressure chamber 32 to keep the pressure in the reservoir chamber 37 under that in the pressure chamber 32. Accordingly, the capacity of the reservoir can be large enough enough, and adjustment can be easily made in a compact structure.
