PRODUCTION OF ESTERIFIED COPOLYMER

PURPOSE:To obtain an esterified copolymer efficiently in one step, by copolymerizing maleic acid or its anhydride with a monomer copolymerizable therewith in the presence of an alcohol and a specified organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:An esterified copolymer essentially consisting of structural units of maleic acid or its anhydride is produced in the following way. Maleic acid or its anhydride is copolymerized with a monomer copolymerizable therewith in the presence of an alcohol and an organic solvent (except an alcohol) of a solubility coefficient >=9. Examples of said monomers which are desirable include isobutylene, styrene, (meth)acrylic acid and (meth)acrylic esters.
