PURPOSE:To enable one type of cartridge to be used in common for monochroic ribbon cartridges and multicolor ribbon cartridges, by providing a cartridge with a means for switching a cartridge identification means, and switching the identification means according to the kind of a ribbon enclosed in the cartridge. CONSTITUTION:When a slidable part 20 is located at the left of an opening part 8a, an actuator 10a of a first micro-switch 10 is permitted to enter a cutout part 20c, whereby the switch is turned OFF. When the slidable part 20 is moved in the direction of an arrow S, the actuator 10a is pressed by a projected part 20b, whereby the switch is turned ON. Thus, a switching means provided for a cartridge 8 is switched to the left or right according as a ribbon enclosed in the cartridge 8 is for monochroic printing or multicolor printing, whereby a cartridge identification means can be constituted, and the same cartridge can be used in common for monochroic ribbon cartridges and multicolor ribbon cartridges.
