Hydraulically actuated tappets, especially those used on exhaust and refill valves in internal combustion engines, have the disadvantage that due to the arrangement of the camshaft above the exhaust and refill valves, the overall height of the cylinder head and hence of the whole internal combustion engine is significantly increased. The invention presents a hydraulic tappet actuation which, compared to mechanical drives, also functions without maintenance and with reduced noise. In addition, a significant reduction of the overall height required is achieved due to the axially and positionally offset arrangement of camshaft (1) and exhaust and refill valve (8) and the pick-up element (21) fitted between the two components. <IMAGE>
