The invention relates to a process for producing an adapter for the gastight connecting of a plastic pipe to a metal pipe. The adapter comprises a metallic section, which is positively connected to a plastic section with at least partial thermoplastic deformation of the latter in such a way that the connection can withstand the expected tensile and torsional loads, and also a sealing ring of soft material clamped between the two said sections. In order that the adapter can be produced simply and inexpensively, it is provided that first of all the sealing ring is fitted on the metal section with prestress and then the connection between the two sections is established while maintaining the prestress.
