Conveyor belt units (21, 22) are arranged on an apparatus frame (20) of a deposition unit for workpieces (3) which are easily damaged during handling, the conveyor belts (23, 24) of the said units each being inclined at an angle of 45 DEG to one another and being arranged symmetrically about a vertical central plane (25). The lateral surface of the lower edge of the upper run (231) is situated on the top of the lateral run of the upper run (241). Both conveyor belt assemblies are connected to a common drive, perhaps via universal joints (27, 271) and belts (28, 281). The conveyor belt unit (22) can, for example, be moved approximately horizontally out of the indicated conveying position by actuation of a compressed-air cylinder. In this process, a floor aperture (31) is formed from the floor seal (29) of the angular conveying trough (30), through which aperture (31) the workpiece (3) can drop onto the transverse conveying belt (8) and is conveyed onwards by the latter. A layer of plastic on the conveyor belt (8) reduces the impact. The workpieces (3) may be formed by means of transverse division of, for instance, extruded tubes, profiled rods and the like made of plastic, but also of wires, cables or cable casings, or bodies of any shape at all. They can then be conveyed onwards and deposited even if the material of which they are made has not yet hardened. The conveyor belts (22, 23) are stopped to permit transverse division and deposition. <IMAGE>
